Kids vote with their feet. Many kids in our community are voting to attend the Boys & Girls Club and participate in the wide array of programs offered. If your child is not yet registered this school year, please remember that 2015-2016 memberships are expired. Please see a front desk attendant to register your member for the current membership year. We don’t want any child to miss out.

This month, we will begin regular programming. To kick off the school year, while we still offered homework help, activities in the gym, and snack bar, our daily programs differed from the norm. We featured favorite activities from the summer; programs and crafts that were Rio, Olympic, or USA themed; working on ideas, crafts, and choreography for the Pork Festival; and more. As you may have noticed, the Club was decked out in red, white, and blue and Olympic decorations. We want to encourage citizenship and patriotism in all our members. In addition, we hope that each child will strive to “go for the gold” and do their personal best this year.

The USA-inspired decorations and crafts also go along with our parade float theme. “We are the Future.” With the Olympics just behind us and the presidential election before us, this is a great way to inspire kids to strive for the best and to encourage others to vote with their feet and join the Club. If your member would like to participate and walk with the Club in the parade, please sign them up at the Information Table. Pick up will be in the grass lawn of the Fire House on the side facing Pizza Shack immediately after the parade. We encourage members to dress in red, white, and blue or as a favorite American, such as Uncle Sam. Please avoid any buttons, clothes, or costumes that show support for or against a particular party, representative, or nominee.

Some of the programs to look forward to this month and this year are Nothing2Do, Beautiful You, Science Club, and Cooking Club. Nothing2Do is an award-winning program where members work together to film a YouTube video to be published on their channel Nothing 2Do. In November, the members will celebrate their channel’s first birthday. Beautiful You is another award-winning program for female members in grades 4th and above. It is one of our Club’s longest-running programs. Girls discuss inner beauty, first impressions, etiquette, personal hygiene, and other topics important to girls at this age. Science Club is a program that features various STEM activities throughout the year. Cooking Club is a new program where members in 3rd grade and above can learn about cooking skills and try what they make.

As the homework load increases and grows more difficult, please remember that the homework room is open each day. Make sure your member is utilizing this area of our Club. Another area to make sure your older member is using is the teen room. This is a special area for members in 6th grade and above to work on homework and participate together in activities that they enjoy without being bothered by younger members. Please note that the responsibility to work on homework is placed on the member, as well as keeping track of laptops and other belongings. Teen Tuesdays are a special time the Club stays open until 7:30 for members in 6th grade and above, and a light meal is served. Our first Teen Scene will be September 23rd to Ben and Ari’s. Please sign up at the front counter.

We have had a great time getting to know this year’s new members and continuing a relationship with returning members. Part of our mission is to enable all youth to reach their full potential. We do that through an awesome team of staff members who work on growing the character of each child who comes through our doors. We want each and every member to realize: Great futures start here!

Thanks- The Directors and Staff of the Boys & Girls Club of Tipton County
