We blinked, and now fall is in full swing! We have many exciting programs and events planned for the month of October. Besides the newsletter and calendar, you can also get information from and stay up to date by looking at our Facebook page (Tipton Boys & Girls Club) and the Information Table near the front counter. Facebook is a great way to see posts about what members are up to each week. Each month, our YouTubers program will upload a preview of the upcoming programs on their channel: Nothing2Do.

Last month, we began regular programming. Members attended returning programs, such as Beautiful You, Torch Club, and Science Club, and many tried out new programs, including Kids 4 Kindness and Cooking Club. Kids 4 Kindness was for members of all ages to come together to brainstorm and implement acts of kindness. The members wrote “We Miss You” postcards for kids who haven’t visited yet this year, made a compliment tree to hang in the game room, and traveled to local businesses to preload gumball and other machines with quarters. Cooking Club was offered only to members in 3rd grade and above. The mini chefs used the kitchen in the CW Mount building to cook meals to taste and to serve to the teens who stayed for Teen Tuesday. Members learned cooking skills and practiced using logic as they made pigs in a blanket, pizza, cupcakes, and more. While this program will not meet in October, it will return in November when members can use our own stove to cook meals.

This month, we will continue with some of our September programs, as well as offer new ones for this year. Yearbook Club will be returning this year for members in 3rd grade and above. They will design this year’s club yearbook using online software. Members will learn how to take quality photos, about carrying a theme throughout the book, how to think about the arrangement of pictures and words on a page, and how to work with others toward a common goal. A favorite of many members is our food art programs. This month, that program is called Kooky Spooky Food, and kids can make Halloween-themed snacks. While we love the fall holidays, some preparations need to begin for winter ones. Original Youngsters will begin working on songs and performances for Christmas, as it takes a lot of practice to get ready. If your member enjoys singing, dancing, or both, make sure they check out the program on Thursdays, and if possible allow them to stay until 5:00.

As the homework load increases and grows more difficult, please remember that the homework room is open each day. Make sure your member is utilizing this area of our Club. Another area to make sure your older member is using is the teen room. This is a special area for members in 6th grade and above to work on homework and participate together in activities that they enjoy without being bothered by younger members. Please note that the responsibility to work on homework is placed on the member, as well as keeping track of laptops and other belongings. Teen Tuesdays are a special time the Club stays open until 7:30 for members in 6th grade and above, and a light meal is served. Our first Teen Scene was last month to Ben and Ari’s. Our October Teen Scene will be on the 28th and will be in-house and open to all middle school students. Please encourage your teen member to invite friends.

Thursday, October 20th is “Keep the Lights On” day. Even if they don’t attend the Club, many of our members don’t leave town for Fall Break. We saw this as an opportunity to host a family and community night. That evening from 6-8, wear your Halloween costumes or come as you are to our Friendly Fright Night. There will be trick-or-treating, face painting, a haunted house for older kids, and more. In order to help make this a success, we need your help with donations of candy and items to pass out. Consider bringing your family to this night of fun.

Speaking of fall break, please remember that this year we are continuing with following Tipton’s school calendar. We will be open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday October 19-21 from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm for registered members at no extra cost. Please note that members must bring a lunch.

Thanks to all those who attended our Annual Gala last month. We are so grateful to the board members that made it a success. Without contributions from the community, we would not be able to provide for members to the extent we do. Thanks for helping us to enable all youth to reach their full potential. Great futures start here!

Thanks- The Directors and Staff of the Boys & Girls Club of Tipton County
